Are Facial Oils Actually Good For My Face?

This is a question we get asked a lot, especially from people who have oily or breakout-prone skin. There’s a common misconception that facial oils lead to clogged pores and breakouts, but that’s not the case. In fact, facial oils are incredibly beneficial for all skin types and provide a natural way to deliver essential nutrients and fatty acids to the skin.

High-quality facial oils are formulated with non-pore-clogging ingredients that help balance your skin’s natural oil production. It sounds counterintuitive, but by feeding your skin oil, it doesn’t need to produce as much itself, restoring a healthy oil balance. It's time to change the way we think about facial oils!

Benefits of face oils

Our skin naturally produces sebum (oil) to keep it moisturised and protected. Different plant oils, like Meadowfoam, Jojoba, Red Raspberry, and Olive Squalane, are similar to the sebum produced by our skin. When facial oils are incorporated into your skincare routine, the skin easily recognises them and knows exactly what to do with them.

Face oils:

  • Rich in potent antioxidants: Protect the skin from free radicals and environmental stressors.
  • Help protect and plump the skin: Provide deep hydration and improve skin elasticity.
  • Act as an anti-inflammatory: Soothe irritated skin and reduce redness.
  • Feed the skin with essential fatty acids: Nourish and strengthen the skin barrier.
  • Work for all skin types, including sensitive and oily: Balance oil production and prevent breakouts.
  • Can help relieve eczema and acne: Calm inflamed skin and promote healing.

How to choose the right oil

When it comes to facial oils, not all are created equal. It’s crucial to choose an oil that won’t lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Have you ever heard of 'comedogenic'? A comedogenic ingredient is a substance that has a high likelihood of clogging pores, leading to breakouts and blackheads.

An oil with lower comedogenic ratings (0 – 2) is safe to use on most skin types. On the other hand, a product with higher comedogenic ratings (4 – 5) can clog pores, especially for people with oily skin, and lead to breakouts and acne.

What we don't want is a comedogenic oil (like palm oil). Instead, we want to opt for a non-comedogenic oil (like Sweet Almond Oil) that will hydrate and benefit the skin without the risk of clogged pores.

How oils are rated on the comedogenic scale:

  • 0 - Will Not Clog Pores
  • 1 - Low
  • 2 - Moderately Low
  • 3 - Moderate
  • 4 - Fairly High
  • 5 - Highly Likely to Clog Pores

One of our hero oils, used in a range of our products (like our Sweet Facial Oil), is Sweet Almond Oil. It has a 2 rating on the comedogenic scale, so it will never clog your pores!
