How To Avoid Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Welcoming a new life into the world is a wondrous journey, yet it often brings concerns about changes to our skin. Stretch marks, a natural occurrence affecting around 80% of expectant mothers, can vary in appearance and impact. For those seeking to minimise the visibility of stretch marks during pregnancy, here are a few tips to keep in mind to reduce and prevent stretch marks from occurring.

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks, a form of scarring, develop when the skin stretches or contracts rapidly, causing collagen and elastic fibers to tear. These marks commonly appear as your body adjusts to the growth of your baby, particularly around the torso, upper thighs, and breasts in the later stages of pregnancy.

Why do stretch marks appear during pregnancy?

As your pregnancy develops and your hormones continue to change, you may experience a number of changes to your hair, skin and body. As your baby starts to grow, it’s extremely common to experience stretch marks particularly around your torso, and sometimes even your upper thighs & breasts - especially in the last 3 months leading up to your due date.

The hormone cortisone plays an important role in pregnancy which can increase by two to four times during the second and third trimester. And although this hormone plays a vital part in the pregnancy process, increased cortisone levels can weaken the elasticity of your skin, making stretch marks more likely to form.

4 tips to avoid stretch marks

Unfortunately there’s no magical potion that will completely banish stretch marks. However there are some nourishing actions we can incorporate in our routine to reduce them and also prevent them.

  1. Hydration Matters: Keep your skin hydrated internally and externally with creams morning and night.
  2. Nourishing Ingredients: Use products with skin-loving ingredients like Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Camellia Oil.
  3. Healthy Diet: Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, D, and E, and zinc to support skin health.
  4. Regular Exercise: Maintain a healthy weight and engage in gentle exercises to promote skin elasticity.

Body oil for stretch marks

A body oil (such as the Sweet Figure Oil) is also an excellent way to maintaining skin elasticity and reducing stretch marks during pregnancy. It’s formulated with Sweet Almond Oil Oil (great for collagen production), vitamin E (known for its anti-ageing and skin regenerating benefits) and Omega fatty acids (improves skin barrier function, suppleness & elasticity).
